Spiderman in China….
I admit it! I am one of those geeky fans who waits in line at Midnight for the opening day of new movies. At least I was until I came here and there were no new flicks….
Unless the Bush administration’s decision to slam new tarrifs on the Chinese queers the deal with some new tit-for-tat retaliation, film goers are in for a change. I expect I will be in line to watch the Premeire of the new Peter Parker Peril Pic’ in China!
Arguably, the Motion Picture Association of America says believes they “lost” $244 million to DVD pirates in China last year and Chinese film studios failed to realize $2.5 billion because of IPR theft. Whatever the number, I think this upcoming pre-emptive strike is a smart manuever and I am anxious to track the box-office numbers.
“Spider-Man 3” will premiere in China on May 3, the day before it opens in North America, China’s top overseas film import official said Thursday. The move is designed to secure a strong opening at the boxoffice before pirated copies have a chance to flood the market.
From the Hollywood Reporter: “Yuan Wenqiang, president of state-run China Film Group’s Film Import & Export Corp., said that releasing Columbia Pictures’ “Spider-Man 3″ in China first — during the peak moviegoing season around the weeklong national holiday that kicks off May 1 — was a testament to the growing importance of China’s theatergoers in the eyes of Hollywood.” Whatever…
I am sure that there are already $.60 studio copies, complete with Chinglish subtitles, out there somewhere, but I am fluffing up the sleeping bag and stocking up on Snickers bars in anticipation just the same….

It should be sweet flick. I’m hoping it comes to Dalian, too.
I remember hearing a while back someone proposing to release DVDs on the same day a film came out in theaters. The idea was that it gave people a legit way to watch at home and took some incentive away from privacy. But that was probably two years ago, and I haven’t heard much since.
Interesting quiz.
